Hi Shane,

I bought this book about a month or so ago and just want to say how much I love your girl art - so appealing in design! I am curious about your working methods, however. It looks like you're still inking traditionally with a brush and ink rather than digitally, correct? (I hope this is the case, being a traditional inker myself!) It looks like you then scan in the line art and your colour is likely done with Photoshop on a layer below. If so, how do you then get that paper texture to the final image?

While I love all of your art, I must admit a preference for the samples with the calligraphic brush outline found in the earlier pages of your book, as opposed to some of the latter samples that are just pure shape without lines. I suspect these are wholly rendered in Photoshop (or Illustrator) using the pen tool to create the shapes of colour. I've tried to work with the pen tool and admittedly can't get the hang of the silly "arrows" and "handles" used to manipulate the curves. Being a complete right brainer myself, I just can't seem to figure stuff like that out!

Anyway, beautiful work as always, Shane. I've long been a fan of your art!

Hi Pete!

Thanks for the nice words- love your work as well.
I do still use a real brush (windsor & Newton series seven only!) and then scan and do the color in photoshop. For the paper texture, I just scan a piece of old pulpy paper and add it on another layer (Just drag it on top of your image and choose "multiply")
Simple to do and it adds a bit of texture and warmth back to the digital color.

You're right about the more graphic pieces being done in PS with the pen tool. I prefer the hand inked images as well, but it's fun to play around with pure shape and color occasionally.

Thanks for the comments, everyone!
